Program Summary:
Peristomal skin complications refer to skin problems around a stoma and can occur in up to 80% of people with an ostomy1. Things like skin irritation, allergic reactions, leakage of stool or urine, infections, and even skin trauma can cause further breakdown and damage to the skin, which are often preventable. Prevention of peristomal skin complications includes proper pouching system selection, good hygiene, and proper skin care. Health care professionals must have a wide range of knowledge, resources, and products in their arsenal if peristomal skin complications occur, as complications can significantly affect the quality of life for people with stomas.
Objectives:
- Discuss strategies for promoting skin health, such as using protective barriers, moisturizers, skin-friendly products, and avoiding harsh chemicals or irritants.
- Recognize and document the signs and symptoms of skin irritation or damage, such as redness, itching, or blistering, and how to address these issues to prevent further complications.
- Review the Convatec skin health product line specially designed to help prevent skin complications and treat various skin conditions that can occur with ostomy living.
